Quidditch Uniform
When it came to making the wizarding sport of Quidditch into reality and into an actual activity that could be captured on film, filmmakers faced a big challenge. Quidditch attire changed over the course of the series, from bulky robes in the first two films to lighter and sportier robes with the player’s name and number on the back in the third and fourth movies.
Quidditch players in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince were given modern tracksuit-style clothing for training sessions, and elbow, knee, and helmets were added to their match gear to emphasize the sport’s often violent and vicious nature.
Beauxbatons School Uniform
The pupils of Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, led by headmistress Madame Maxime, visit Hogwarts as part of the Triwizard Tournament in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The “French Blue” cloth of the Beauxbatons uniform was chosen to contrast with the other school colors of muted blacks, browns, and greys.
Philip Treacy, the famed milliner, designed and constructed the distinctive pointed Beauxbatons hat. Treacy made an initial model out of canvas and send it to Paris to have a hardwood mold made to the proper measurements and this was utilized to make each Beauxbaton student’s hat.
Yule Ball Costume
The Costume Department had the opportunity to design a more formal style of wizard clothing for the Yule Ball held to commemorate Christmas and the Triwizard Tournament. Jany Temime, Harry Potter costume designer, created over 300 outfits for the Yule Ball, with a workforce of over 100 assistants. Temime has a difficult problem in recreating Hermione’s classic Yule Ball attire.
The finished gown was comprised of yards of pink silk and 12 meters of chiffon, layered to form a stunning, romantic gown that took three months to create. The Hogwarts boys wore a satin silk ‘Wizard’s Tuxedo,’ whilst the Durmstrang students wore military dress uniforms. Ron Weasley’s yule ball robes proved to be the exception as it was made with an old carpet fabric and lots of lace.
19 Years Later Costumes
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 ended with an older Harry, Ginny, Ron, and Hermione bringing their children to King’s Cross station nineteen years later to send them off to Hogwarts. Jany Temime, who was responsible for designing clothing for the scene, intended to stick to the same color palette as the rest of the film series, which included pinks, oranges, blues, and browns.
